Gore Verbinski to direct 'Bioshock' Universal bringing videogame to bigscreen By MICHAEL FLEMING, BEN FRITZ
Universal and Gore Verbinski are going into "Bioshock." Studio has signed a deal to turn last year's hit videogame, which won numerous awards and sold more than 2 million units worldwide, into a film.
The "Pirates of the Caribbean" helmer is attached to direct and produce. "Aviator" scribe John Logan is in talks to pen the screenplay.
"Bioshock" publisher Take-Two Interactive is getting a multimillion-dollar advance against gross points on the pic. It's believed to be the biggest videogame-to-movie deal since 2005, when U and Fox signed onto the since aborted "Halo" pic, for which Microsoft got $5 million against 10%.
Take-Two executive chairman Strauss Zelnick said the "state of the art" deal is structured so that "Bioshock" won't end up in turnaround like "Halo," which is back with Microsoft.
"The reason I structured it the way I did is to make sure it gets made," he emphasized.
"Bioshock" takes place in an underwater city based on the free market principles of Ayn Rand, but things have gone disastrously wrong. Players control a pilot who crash-lands at a secret entrance to the city, called Rapture, and is drawn into a power struggle during which he discovers that his will is not as free as he'd thought.
"I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that's cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential," said Verbinski. "Of all the games I've played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative."
Take-Two has been approached by a number of producers and studios since the game came out in August but waited until it had swept most of the end-of-year industry awards and racked up impressive holiday sales before working with CAA to package the project. Universal got a first look and made a preemptive bid.
Zelnick, who was president of Fox in the early '90s, led the dealmaking for his company, rather than set the project up with a producer.
"One of the things we decided early on is that we didn't want to go through a producer," he commented. "It's terribly important to us to have a meaningful influence on how this project is produced. We didn't want any insulation between us."
Verbinski noted that Rapture's art deco design and visually arresting characters, such as the mechanical Big Daddys who protect genetically mutated girls called Little Sisters, particularly inspired him to see the game as a film.
Though no release date is even being targeted, Verbinski said he plans to start pre-production as soon as Logan's script is finished and approved by all involved.
Helmer has been regularly consulting with Ken Levine, the game's creative director, though it's not yet clear if the game developer will have a formal role in the film.
For Universal, project marks a return to the videogame space after the disastrous "Halo" experience. After more than a year of development, during which Peter Jackson was signed to exec produce and Neil Blomkamp to direct the "Halo" feature, U and Fox shut down the project over cost concerns.
"This deal gives Universal the opportunity to have the immersive, addictive universe of 'Bioshock' interpreted by a filmmaker with unrivaled abilities to convey story, action and large-scale, fantastical visuals," said U co-chairman David Linde.
Take-Two is developing a "Bioshock" sequel that will be released in 2009, almost certainly before the film comes out.
Though numerous videogames have been turned into movies and others are in the works, very few have been commercial or critical successes. Take-Two itself has turned down numerous attempts by Hollywood to option its Rockstar label's hit franchise "Grand Theft Auto." "Bioshock" marks the first movie deal ever for the publisher.

3:16 pm - One-Third of Women Who Meet People Online Have Sex on First Date
|
http://www.switched.com/2007/11/12/one-third-of-women-who-meet-people-online-have-sex-on-first-date/
I thought this article was funny enough to begin with, especially the part where they mention that like 100% of guys who meet people online give it up on the first date, but then I started reading the reader comments below the article (and there are not many, so don't worry... you won't have to read TOO far) and some of those were actually funnier than the main article itself.
Also, Happy Veteran's Day. If you know someone who's served (past or present) tell 'em thanks.

4:59 pm - Just saw this on today's daily Wrestling Observer update...
|
"THQ is said to be thinking about reprogramming the WWE No Mercy video game to use the current roster. There is a mention of it at http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/11/rumor-classic-w.html"
And then when I looked around on that site, I saw the following:
Rumor: Classic WWE Games Get Wii Update
"The latest crazy game industry rumors from Electronic Gaming Monthly's long-running Quartermann column have hit the interwebs, and it appears as if a classic wrestling game might be making its debut on Wii in the near future.
Specifically, the scuttlebutt states that THQ's acclaimed WWF No Mercy, developed by wrestling masters Aki and generally considered to be one of the best wrestling games ever made, will be updated with the WWE's current line of wrestling superstars and released via WiiWare download service."
This'll probably turn out to be some bullshit, on-line rumor; but if there's even a small bit of truth to that, and AKI is making wrestling games again, it might be time to start thinking about getting a Wii.

I always thought that was a neat show back when I was little. I mean it starred The Beastmaster, Richter, Freddy Krueger and featured rat-eating lizard-man aliens. You can't beat that!

6:08 pm - UFC announces signing of Hall of Fame fighter
|
8/17/2007 9:12:00 PM UFC announces signing of Hall of Fame fighter
by Dave Meltzer
The expected signing of Wanderlei Silva by the UFC was made official today in Las Vegas.
"This is the pinnacle of my seven year career in this company," said Dana White after the siging. "I'm so excited to have Wanderlei under contract. He grabbed my arm and looked me in the eyes like one of his pre-fight staredowns and he said, `I'm gonna fight so good for you, you're gonna see the best fights ever from Wanderlei Silva.'"
Silva, 31, is expected to debut on the 12/29 PPV show from Las Vegas. Provided Chuck Liddell beats Keith Jardine on 9/22 in Anaheim and comes out of it without any serious injuries, he would most likely be the first opponent.
White has attempted for five years to match Silva with Liddell, to the point of putting Liddell in the 2003 Pride Grand Prix tournament. However, Liddell was eliminated in the tournament by Quinton Jackson. Silva beat Jackson to win the tournament that year.
Silva is the longest reigning champion in the history of MMA, holding the Pride championship in the 205 pound weight class from November 3, 2001, through February 24, 2007. Pride championships are defended far less frequently than UFC championships, but Silva would be high on any list of the greatest fighters in MMA history. In the 2006 Observer MMA Hall of Fame voting among MMA reporters, broadcasters and fighters, Silva garnered 87% of the votes in his first year of eligibility.
Silva, 31, was Pride's top light heavyweight (called middleweight in Japan at the time) star after his first two wins over Kazushi Sakuraba in 2001. He remained champion until losing to Dan Henderson via knockout. Silva was sick with a high fever during the fight in Las Vegas. However, where he stands today has been questioned since he suffered consecutive brutal knockouts, including a late 2006 fight with Mirko Cro Cop.

5:16 pm - Rest In Peace, Sherri
|
Just checking out the Wrestling Observer website and found the following. How sad... she was terribly young. Man, what a bummer to start the weekend, right?
Sherry Russell aka Sensational Sherri Martel passed away, this morning, at home. She was 49.
No other details are available at the moment. Police are currently at her residence with her husband.
In 1991, while managing Randy Savage, Sherri was the only woman ever to win the Manager of the Year award.

2:28 pm - Videodrome (1983)
|
I don't recall why this comes up today, exactly... maybe I saw something about it over at AICN this morning, but at work today I looked up David Cronenberg's Videodrome on Wikipedia.
Have any of you guys seen this film, and is it worth checking out? It sounds crazy as all hell, but I don't think it's one that video stores carry because it's so old, and sounds like it only has a cult following. (The number of bands that have sampled clips from it for their music is a little crazy, if what Wikipedia reports is true.) I was just wondering, because there's a Criterion edition out there and, again, this film just sounds kinda weird... but the kind of weird that I think I want to check out.
